The Columbia Institute is committed to lifelong learning that benefits all segments of society. At Columbia, we recognize that the skyrocketing cost of education makes it difficult for working people and mature students to return to the classroom for retraining and skills upgrading.

Lifelong Learning Scholarship Program

The Columbia Institute Awards program is one of the few scholarship programs designed to support the financial needs of adult learners interested in re-training and skills development. Join the growing community of Columbia Award winners.

The Columbia Institute is now accepting applications for our Awards Program. You may be eligible to receive one of 14 scholarships valued at $1000 each. Qualifying applicants may renew their award up to four years!

To be eligible, you must be:

  • 24 or older
  • BC resident
  • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • Not currently enrolled in a training or academic program (pre-requisite courses do not count as enrolment)

Re-Application for the Lifelong Learning Scholarship Program

The Columbia Institute Lifelong Learning Awards are renewable for up to four years.  If you are the recipient of a Columbia Institute Award and would like to renew your application for continuing studies, please complete the form below.

Re-application is only for those who have previously received a Columbia Institute Award.

Telecommunication Workers Union Scholarships

The TWU is offering four scholarships valued at $1000 each and three scholarships valued at $750 each to children of TWU members graduating from high school.  This scholarship program considers leadership values and labour knowledge.

Applicants must include a completed application form, an updated transcript and a letter of reference from a teacher or employer.  Students must be registering for courses at a public institution.

Dennis McGann Bursary

The Columbia Foundation, the Canadian Union of Public Employees British Columbia (CUPE BC), Canadian Association of Labour Media (CALM), NOW Communications, and the McGann family have established the Dennis McGann Bursary. This exciting new bursary program is designed for those studying or planning to study Communications who demonstrate a commitment to the issues and actions affecting working people.

One $1000 bursary will be awarded to a Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant who is enrolling or enrolled in full or part time Communications studies at an accredited public post-secondary institution in Canada. Financial need must be demonstrated. This bursary also considers community service.

United Steelworkers Scholarships

The United Steelworkers is offering 12 scholarships valued at $1000 to members of USW in good standing for two years or more.  Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants applying to an accredited college, university, community college, or technical or trade school, or accredited labour program.  A letter of reference from a union representative as to why you would be the ideal USW scholarship recipient is also required.

Awards will be distributed on the following basis:

  • Three (3) scholarships to District 3 (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and the Territories) members
  • Three (3) scholarships to District 5 (Quebec) members
  • Six (6) scholarships to District 6 (Ontario and Atlantic Canada) members
